Chapter Eight

Callen never intended to harm Ingrid. No female got marked twice, it was unheard of. In the heat of the moment, it just felt so damn right that he bit her without thinking. Even with Ethan looking on. His only regret was not talking to Ingrid about it first, not stealing her from Ethan. He was the one that found her, not his alpha.

Ingrid didn’t even know what they really were. Werewolves were just a myth or urban legend to humans. To reveal the truth to her could destroy the delicate fabric of her mind. All their lives, humans were programmed to believe they were the center of the universe. The dominant species. So much more existed that they were blind to. Wolves lived down the street from them in cities, were their neighbors in the country, and they sent their children to the same schools. Werewolves were humans in every aspect when in human form. Perhaps they were more volatile and emotional, and of course there was their strength. But while in human form, they played their role in society well.

When they shifted, that’s when everything changed. They needed to run and hunt and feel the wind against their fur every so often. During the full moon, the urge to break free of their human skin became overwhelming, like a butterfly desperate to escape its cocoon and spread its wings. Still, they didn’t spontaneously shift like the Hollywood movies portrayed. There were packs that rarely shifted out of wolf form. They shunned their human side and became feral in most regards. Not Callen. He enjoyed both sides of his nature and planned on a future with his human mate.

Then there was the problem of Ethan. Since he already marked Ingrid, too, no way would he give her up. Callen had no clue how things would play out for Ingrid with two bonds, or between him and Ethan.

“Don’t be afraid,” he said, reaching for her. She flinched away, but when their eyes met, her shoulders lost their tension, and she took his hand.

“Talk to me. Please,” she pleaded.

He took a deep breath, unsure where to start or even what to reveal. Ethan stood next to him in silence, not offering to help explain things, but he’d always been a wolf of action and passion, not of words.

Callen gathered Ingrid into his arms. She felt so soft and petite against him. His protective and territorial instincts surfaced, filling him with the strength of a mated male.

“Not everyone lives like you do. Some people choose to live away from society, to be more at one with nature. There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world that you’ve been blind to, Ingrid.”

“You haven’t explained anything. You guys choose to live out in the sticks. Fine. What does that have to do with me?”

“You feel something for me. Search your feelings, you can’t deny it. Probably the same thing for Ethan. It’s because of what we both did to you. The marks on your neck.
